Faulty 200A Main Breaker Replaced and Service Restored

When the power goes out and resetting the breakers doesn't fix anything, the problem is usually sitting right at the top of the panel - the main breaker. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. A faulty 200A main breaker that had completely failed, taking the whole service down with it.

Opening up this panel told us a lot. Years of buildup, cobwebs packed into every corner, rust along the enclosure edges, and wiring that had clearly been sitting undisturbed for a long time. Before we could do anything, we had the meter pulled. That's the only safe way to work on a main breaker - you have to kill the power coming in from the utility side before anyone gets near those lugs.

With the meter out, we pulled the old breaker and swapped in a new Milbank 200A 2-pole unit. UL listed, properly rated for the service. Once it was seated and secured, we brought the meter back, verified voltage with our Fluke clamp meter, and confirmed the service was reading solid at 240V. Clean power, fully restored.

This is the kind of electrical troubleshooting and repair work that has to be done right. A main breaker isn't something you limp along with or ignore. If it's failing, your whole home or building is unprotected - and you're one bad event away from a much bigger problem. Code-conscious, safe work isn't optional. It's the baseline.

If your panel is acting up - breakers that won't hold, power flickering, or a full outage that reset won't fix - don't wait on it. These issues don't get better on their own.
