A 100-amp panel works fine - until it doesn't. Add an EV to the mix and you're asking that old panel to do a job it was never designed for. That's exactly what was going on at this Apple Valley home. The homeowner wanted reliable EV charging, and the existing setup just couldn't support it.

Here's what we were working with - an aging 100-amp panel packed with wiring that had clearly been added to over the years. It wasn't just undersized for EV charging. It was the kind of setup that makes any electrician pause and take stock before moving forward. Upgrading it wasn't optional. It was the right call.

We pulled the old panel and brought everything up to a full 200-amp service. That means the home now has double the capacity it had before - plenty of headroom for an EV, future additions, or anything else the homeowner wants to add down the road. We also installed a new 50-amp NEMA 14-50R receptacle mounted cleanly on the exterior wall, which gives the homeowner a solid, dedicated outlet ready for Level 2 EV charging.

The NEMA 14-50 is the go-to outlet for home EV charging - it works with most Level 2 chargers and adapters right out of the box. No workarounds, no undersized circuits. Just a proper, dedicated connection that handles the load the way it should. That's the difference between charging your car overnight with confidence versus crossing your fingers every time you plug in.

Panel upgrades like this one are becoming a lot more common as more homeowners switch to electric vehicles. If your home is still running on a 100-amp service, it's worth having it looked at before you buy that EV - not after.
